The Creative Bloq Design Annual 2017

At the end of last year, Oliver Media completed The Creative Bloq Design Annual 2017—a book project for Future Publishing, showcasing the year’s greatest design work. It was a dream job for a number of reasons. Editorial Director Dan Oliver explains …

Firstly, producing the Creative Bloq Design Annual 2017 was an opportunity to move beyond the traditional magazine production that Future is well-known for, and create something that showcased the design industries’ finest work from the past 12 months. And we partnered with new printers (Gomer Press, based in Wales) to ensure that the vision we had for the book was a realistic one.

For any print nerds, here’s the spec:

  • Text pages: 224pp
  • Cover pages: 4pp
  • Finishing: Casebound sewn. Fold attach coloured Finelinen endpapers, section sew line and trim. Cased in Finelinen, debossed with black foil front and back. Glue cases over 3000 mic boards with rounded back
  • Colours text: 4
  • Colours cover: Unprinted – foil in black
  • Text paper: 150gsm uncoated paper
  • Cover paper: Finelinen coloured paper
  • Special Cover Finishes: Deboss and block foil in black text

Trouble and strife and sentimentality

The second reason I loved this job was that it gave me the opportunity to work with my wife for the first time on a commercial project. Having both been in publishing and design for around 20 years, we’d never actually had the chance to work together. And as this one was of the main reasons for setting up Oliver Media in the first place, landing a job that required both of our skills, just a few months after launching the business was the perfect scenario.

Lastly, and maybe this was just sentimentality creeping in, but it was great to work on a project that enabled us to shine a light on the amazing work being featured in magazines such as Computer Arts, 3D World, net, and Creative Bloq (via its website, which also serves the print titles). Despite my last five years prior to setting up Oliver Media being primarily focused on web publishing, and the commercial efforts within Future’s ‘Creative & Design’ group, none of it was ever possible without the hard work, dedication, and craft applied by the editorial teams that work across the magazines, sites and events at Future. To showcase their efforts was an absolute pleasure.

Below is a video showcase, pulled together by Peter Gray, which offers up a little more insight into the production process behind the Creative Bloq Design Annual . And if you’d like to work with us on a project in 2017, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!
